Manitoba Emergency Services College - Canine Training

The Manitoba Emergency Services College offers a number of K9 related courses throughout the year. Other K9 related courses can be designed and developed for your individual agencies needs.

Some of the courses currently being offered are:


K-9 Administrators Course

This course is designed for K-9 Administrators of any K-9 program. It covers the requirements of running a K-9 program as well as many other issues that K-9 administrators should be made aware of. The Course is designed for Police, Detector, and Search and Rescue dog programs. (read more...)


K-9 Evaluators Course

This course is designed to give some standardization to your K-9 evaluations. It covers the history of and the current industry standards being used in K-9 certifications.

The Course is designed for Police, Detector, and Search and Rescue dog programs. The course will give candidates both theory and practical evaluation experience.

The course is designed to meet the needs of the Canadian Urban Search and Rescue Disaster Search Canine Certification Guidelines. This course is open to members of any government run canine program. (read more...)


K-9 Quarry Course

This course is designed to provide the necessary skills and knowledge required to help train a working dog. Training techniques and K-9 Psychology will be covered to prepare students for working with and around professional working dogs. K-9 Search Specialist for Structural Collapse

This course is designed as an introduction to all aspects of Canine Search and Rescue training from GSAR Ground Search and Rescue to USAR Urban Search and Rescue.

This Course is designed to help prepare a Canine team for all aspects of Search and Rescue. It is designed to meet the requirements of the Canadian Urban Search and Rescue Disaster Search Canine Certification Guidelines. This course is open to members of any government run canine program. K-9 GSAR Fundamentals Course

This course is designed to cover all aspects of Canine Search and Rescue with an emphasis in Wilderness - lost person searching.

This course will help prepare K-9 teams for a response to all types of Missing person incidents as well as large scale natural disasters. (read more...)


K-9 Tactical First Aid Course

This course is designed for all dog handlers and trainers. General K9 first aid will be covered along with Emergency First Aid for operational dog handlers in a tactical environment. Handlers will learn numerous life saving techniques that can be used in an emergency to help keep their K-9 partners alive until they can be transported to a veterinary hospital. Needed supplies for an emergency First Aid kit and their uses will be explained. (read more...)

Introduction to K-9 Search and Rescue

A one day introductory K-9 workshop and dog evaluation for those wanting to gain knowledge in K-9 Search and Rescue.  During the workshop students will learn the realities of K-9 search and rescue and how they can get involved within Manitoba.  Dog evaluations are also conducted for students who already have a dog that may have potential as a search and rescue canine. K-9 Provincial Search and Rescue Certification

Individual K-9 Search and Rescue evaluations will be conducted for interested students and their canine to test to the Provincial Search and Rescue Standard.  K-9 teams that successfully pass the Provincial Standard will be added to the Provincial K-9 call out list. This list will be maintained by the Office of the Fire Commissioner and provided to teams within the SARMAN volunteer network and the Police agencies who are the authority having jurisdiction within the Province. These certified K-9 teams will also be considered for future openings with CAN TF-4, the Provincial Urban Search and Rescue team. (read more...)
