Fire and Life Safety Inspections

The Fires Prevention and Emergency Response Act was amended in June, 2006. The amended Act clearly defined the responsibility for local authorities to enforce the Manitoba Fire Code within its boundaries by inspecting prescribed buildings and ensuring that a record of inspections is maintained.

In April, 2007 the Fire Safety Inspection Regulation – MB 208/2014 was enacted to clearly define those properties which were required to be inspected on a regular basis by both the local authorities and the Office of the Fire Commissioner.

The regulation was written in a manner that divides the buildings requiring regular inspections into two general categories:

  • Buildings where persons are under the care of others Annual inspections
  • Assembly occupancies where persons often gather 3 year inspections

Fire Inspector – Level I and II – NFPA 1031 accredited training is available in an on-line format through the Manitoba Emergency Services College. Local authorities are encouraged to promote their designated inspectors to complete this training in an effort to provide the highest level of service to their respective clients.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner is committed to assisting the local authorities in the development of their respective Fire & Life Safety Inspection programs through the newly formed Municipal support program. OFC inspectors are available to mentor local inspectors as they develop their skills in this area.

The forms below are available to assist local authorities in developing their Fire & Life Safety Inspection program.

Various sections of the Manitoba Fire Code require that documentation is maintained for certain buildings by the owner or occupant in charge. The Fire Prevention Monthly Log forms below are samples of maintenance records that an owner or occupant in charge may use. You may save these as your own file and customize to your specific needs.
